Trouble-Shooting 1313 Errors (DOS version only)

A BLX 1313 exception error indicates that a protection exception has occurred. This may result in a GPF (general protection fault) or page fault or other operating system error.

This fault may indicate a hardware problem that CAPITAL has been unfortunate enough to trigger. However, the following should be attempted in the order indicated to resolve the problem:

1. Run a Database Maintenance (Clean Databases) operation. This may resolve the fault if the problem is caused by a corrupted index (CDX) file. If you are run the CAPITAL GL, be sure to perform the Database Maintenance operation in the GL as well. Be sure to perform a SCANDISK on your server computer's hard disk before you perform any Database Maintenance operation. If the system crashes before the maintenance operation can be completed, then the problem is severe and a Maintenance Operation is unlikely to be sufficient to resolve the issue.

2. The CAP.EXE file or one of its subprograms may be corrupt. Try reinstalling the EXE file from a back-up or your original installation or upgrade disks. (If reinstalling from original disks, load the software into a DIFFERENT directory and copy the EXE file across. Be sure to make a back-up of your old CAP.EXE file in case you accidently mix up versions.) If you are running CAPITAL on a network, confirm that CAPITAL runs OK on your other computers. If this proves to be the case then it is unlikely to be a corrupted program file.

3. Try adding the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

SET CAPMEM=/DT250000

This will not "fix" the system but may hide the problem by forcing CAPITAL to run as a 640K limited real mode DOS application.

4. Placing this line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file has fixed some problems with computers containing buggy BIOS chips:

SET CAPMEM=/HP-

(This should only apply to very old computers.)

5. Try disabling all BIOS and VIDEO RAM shadowing in case of memory conflicts with Windows. (This should only apply to very old computers.)

6. At this point it appears that you may have an unresolved hardware problem or a corrupted Windows installation. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that your back-up or upgrade may be corrupted also. Contact CAPITAL OFFICE Technical Support to obtain replacement disks to see if that makes any difference, if the error occurs on all computers running CAPITAL.
