Cost Categories
Up to 10 cost categories can be defined for allocating costs when taking delivery of goods through the Importing and Shipment Costing System.
Typical cost categories include duty, shipping, insurance, freight, and miscellaneous fees and charges. If a cost category is not assigned a description, it will be unavailable for use when costing shipments. The first cost category has the fixed description of General and this cannot be changed.
Cost
categories are for your reference when comparing shipping costs for goods that are regularly delivered
with a significant freight/shipping cost component. These categories are in addition to, and do not replace,
your expense and purchase codes in your general ledger's chart of accounts or expense table.
For example, if you assign shipment costs to 'duty' for a particular product and then deliver that item again in the future, you can compare the previous duty amount to the current duty amount. For your general accounting system, however, duty normally forms part of the total value of your stock item's cost, and appears in your general ledger and stock system as an increase in your 'stock on hand' value.
If you have no interest in comparing past and current shipment related costs, e.g., previous and current duty charges or previous and current shipping costs, then you do not need to define additional cost categories. All costs can simply be allocated to General costs.
